Are dental implants (titanium pins) a good base for securing dentures?

I am considering dental implant surgery to secure a full set of upper dentures with implanted titanium pins. Since no crowns will be applied to the pins, is this a less expensive and more practical way of regaining the use of my teeth. Are there any dental implant titanium pins designed for securing dentures without having to use adhesive?

Are dental implants (titanium pins) a good base for securing dentures?
I know quite a bit about this topic. I will answer your question but feel free to click my name and write me anytime. I have a complete mouth restoration with 8 implants on top and 6 on the bottom. My teeth are screwed onto my implants which makes my teeth as secure as my permanent teeth ever were and much prettier. I have a dear friend who is a Prosthodontist. She shared with me a study she did. It is proven that those who get dentures without the teeth in the jaw that the bone begins to deteriorate. In some quicker than others. It is also proven that titanium implants mimic the roots of the teeth which stop the deteroration. Plus dentures constantly move and the friction back and forth wear against the gums. A person who can afford the kind I have has the best option but those who cannot if they can afford at least 2 to 4 implants and the denture they have modified to snap onto the implants can finally eat with confidence, never worry about slipping, can eat pretty much anything they want and the speech is corrected as the teeth are stable. It is also proven that the cost is quite a bit less than the kind I have. However, she does not recommend the "mini implants" as these do not have the longevity as the regular ones do. Also you can have the roof cut away from the uppers, thus tasting your food again like before. Never again will you need adhesives. But remember that when you have them placed you cannot put pressure on them for chewing for about 5 to 6 months. Now don't freak out about that. It's easier than you think and I can share how with you later if you chose to write to me.

Skeeter
Reply:Hi,

I think implants are an excellent way to secure a denture. There are o-rings that attach the denture to the implants. No adhesive required. The implants have a ball and the denture has a hole with a ring on it that snaps onto the implant and secures it in place. This is a better way than conventional denture only...it helps preserve the bone and reduces the relignments that are needed as the bone changes under the denture. A great investment. If you are in Indiana, I know a great dentist that can help.
Reply:Yes and yes. Jaime and Skeeter have both given you good answers. I'm not so opposed to mini implants for dentures, though, as they are not really "loaded" the way Skeeter's implants are. They are only "locator studs" to keep the dentures from slipping around and popping out. The gums and bone still bear most of the load from chewing and there is a bit of "play" designed into the system to keep the mini implants from actually bearing very much load. Skeeter has the "deluxe, high-priced spread" and this is a wonderful way to go, but if you simply want to improve your denture wearing experience, then mini implants might serve you very well for a bit less of an investment.

Do you think that there's a market for novelty dentures?

Imagine, if you will, glow in the dark teeth, and vampire fangs. Maybe dentures that play a song! Think of the possibilities!!

What type of novelty denture would you want?

A grill that has bling. Cuz i'm gangsta like that.
Reply:Novelty dentures already exist in abundance. Check out the Grilles all the kids are wearing.

Keeping dentures white?

I'm a big coffee drinker and worry about yellowing. I've only had dentures for 2 years now with no problems so far. I do use the tablets to soak them but wondering if there is something better to keep them from yellowing.

Keeping dentures white?
Just keep doing what you are doing, and brush them daily. Ideally the only way to avoid staining is to avoid staining foods. Red wine, coffee, smoking etc. Hope this helps!
Reply:Sounds like you just need to keep doing what you are doing. That is the best way to keep them white and clean.

I am diabetic, need dentures, but can't afford the cost of the actual dentures.?

Is there anywhere possible that you can find a dentist that will do dentures at minimal cost?

I am diabetic, need dentures, but can't afford the cost of the actual dentures.?
Does your town have a dental school? If so, maybe they can help you or lead you to someone who can? Ask around to some regular places who make dentures, maybe they could help your or guide you to someone who can.

If I had the available cash, I would pay it for you.

Good luck.
Reply:i know there are places that will entire set for like $300.00

Getting dentures?

I have bad teeth and the only reasonable thing I can do is to have them all pulled and get dentures. However, my insurance doesnt cover that. Does anyone know of a dental insurance company I could sign up with that would cover it?

Getting dentures?
Not really. I've looked into dental insurance a few different times. The plans I've seen involved (mind it's been a few years) a $10-$20 week payments and the work done is usually limited to check-ups and simple visits and you have a co-pay. Denture and braces are only allowed after at least 2 years of being on the plans, and then they only cover a percentage (40-60%).

You might find it more cost effective to get a credit approval though a company at your dental office, usually interest free for a year. At the end of the year, get a new credit card and transfer your balance for interest free payments for another year to 18 months.

New Dentures?

I'm 33 and got all my teeth pulled on Monday the 6th,,upper and lower and got immediate dentures. My face is still a little sore and my gums are black and blue.Any idea when my gums will return to normal and be pain free?

Also will i ever be able to eat steak or beef jerky again? (:

New Dentures?
HELLO CHIP,

THE SWELLING WILL DECREASE EACH AND EVERY DAY. YOUR GUMS SHOULD BE FULLY HEALED IN 2 WEEKS, BUT THE UNDERLYING BONE WONT BE HEALED FOR ABOUT 6 WEEKS.

THE IMMEDIATE DENTURES WILL NEED TO BE RELINED WHEN THEY START TO FEEL LOOSE IN THE MONTHS AHEAD. BE PATIENT AND LET THE LEARNING HAPPEN GRADUALLY.

THERE WILL BE A TRAINING PERIOD FOR LEARNING TO CHEW FOODS DIFFERENTLY
Reply:It will probably at least another 6 weeks unfortunately until most of the swelling goes down and the colour returns to normal, however it takes up to 3-6 months for your gums to be fully healed.

Yes, you will be able to eat steak and beef jerky :) it will take a while though. Once you get your proper dentures, it will take about 4-5 weeks to get used to eating and speaking again.

Good luck and take it easy!
Reply:you shouldn't of gotten immediate dentures, the swelling has to go down before the dentures will fit ... they should go back to normal within a week, if by Monday/Tuesday your still black %26amp; blue call the dentist %26amp; make sure he gets those dentures to fit correctly ..

as for steak %26amp; beef jerky .. eventually but you'll have take small bites.
Reply:to be safe, within 2 weeks.

You will not be able to eat steak or jerky unless you get dental implants to stabilize those dentures.

Keep smiling,

Dr. Marvin

Reply:Hi Chip! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years. The gums take several weeks to heal and the bruising will fade out completely in time. However you should be doing lots of warm salty rinses to remove plaque and food build up as well as bacteria that stops the gums from healing.

Second, dentures saddle the gum ridge on the bottom, and rely on suction from the palate on the upper. Beef jerky, apples and corn is not an option. Your teeth are only plastic and any rough go of it will cause them to flip out of your mouth. It they hit a hard surface they will crack or brake. And don't learn the hard way about dropping them in the sink. Once they brake you must get a new one as they can not be glued back together.

Steak in tiny bites will be okay if you use denture adhesive on the bottom. Remember you chew with your lower jaw so any thing like pizza crust, steak, bagels, or sticky or chewy can pull the denture out. People don't realize this until they have them and tend to stick them in a drawer and gum their foods. This is not a healthy thing to do, but people do it. Some of my patients have had several implants put in down the road and a new denture that snapped on to them. This is a great way to go if you can afford it and your bone is healthy, you can ask the dentist. As your gums heal anad you learn to chew with the dentures, you will have to do trial and error to see what loosens you dentures. Once you get that down, you will know better what and how to eat. Good luck. M
Reply:Healing will take time, you have been through alot!! Perhaps you should go to your dentist for a recheck to make sure everything is healing properly. Make a list of questions for your dentist so you don't forget to ask something you really want to know. As for what you will eat, everyone is different. It will just be trial and error as you heal and learn to adjust to your new dentures.

Discolored dentures?

Is there any way to bring back the pink color of dentures without having to spend hundreds of dollars on new ones?

Discolored dentures?
Wipe dentures with cut lemon %26amp; salt

It helps
Reply:Put them in a glass with efferdent, I think.
Reply:They have plaque remover for dentures, or try a soak in chlorine bleach.
Reply:There are lots of denture cleaners out there. I remember buying one called "Stain Away" for my mom. they say it had professional strength.
Reply:Denture cleaner-2 tsp of Calgon: 1 TBSP bleach: 1/2 c water

Whitener- 1 TBSP of white vinegar to 1 cup water

Straight bleach erodes dentures and will turn them yellow.

Whitening dentures?

I need help whitening my dentures. Any advice?

Whitening dentures?
You can't actually whiten dentures. You can remove stain on your dentures with certain products but dentures do not bleach the way that teeth do. When they made your denture they should have asked you what shade you wanted to be. B-1 is really white. A-2 is more natural. The only way to really change the shade of the teeth on your denture is to replace the teeth and that's probably very costly. Good luck!
Reply:My Grand mom used to use that efferdent whitening tablets. Her teeth were always white. And they also have special paste for whitening for dentures. Good luck!!!

Does anyone have dentures?

My boyfriend has already been fitted for his upper dentures, he goes Thursday for the extraction of 9 upper teeth and he must have alveoplasty done, he will then get his dentures the same day. I am wondering how long recovery will take, I am sure it depends on the person but anyone that has been through this before will be helpful. He will be off work Thursday, Friday and of course Saturday and Sunday but then his work is having him go out of town (which has already been planned before the dentist appt. was made) Monday through Saturday, he will be 400 miles away. I am really worried about him. So any info would be helpful. By the way, we are going to get the dentist opinion on it Thursday but just wanted actual people who have been through it. Thanks!!

Does anyone have dentures?
I had 23 teeth removed on a friday and was back to work on the Wednesday. My mouth started to bleed again so I had to take another two days off. The pain wasn't bad but it depends on how he is getting his teeth removed. I had mine removed atthe hospital. Cut along top of my gums and just pulled them out. If he is getting them pulled out the normal way could hurt alot more. The dentures were alittle tight. hard to get off and back at first. Don't try to take them off for a couple of days though.

Good Luck!

I am getting Dentures on Friday...HELP!!??

I would like to know some of your experiences with getting dentures. I am 31, having 20 extractions, getting full set on top and partial on bottom. I will be getting an immediate TEMP set of dentures/partial that same day. Everyone I have talked to says the pain level will be no more than a normal extraction but I beg to differ. Can you offer your experiences??

I am getting Dentures on Friday...HELP!!??
When I had my teeth extracted and dentures put in the biggest problem I found with them was that when I went to eat, my mouth felt so full with the tiniest morsel of food. But hey, it was good for the waist line for a while. :)

I didn't have a great deal of pain. There was some, but definately nothing major. I guess with everything it all depends on your pain threshold. If you have a high pain threshold you won't feel it too bad, but if it's low, then you'll feel like... like.... like you've just had all your teeth pulled.

I wish you all the best when you get it done. I'm sure though that you will find it a breeze.
Reply:all im just going to tell u is.... DON'T panick! because it's not good.

trust me everything is going to be GOOD
Reply:Yeah.. I really feel sorry for you and what you will be going threw.

My mother had gotten dentures both top and bottom... She said the pain level was close to childbirth.... that she couldn't eat for 4 days.. it upset her stomach so much. there is a lot of bleeding and it nauseated her stomach. All in all.. its one of them hellish experiences .
Reply:i don't have any personal experience, but my great aunt got hers and she didn't seem to have any problems. you'll be alright.
Reply:i had all my upper teeth out and a temp put in,best way to go.2 years ago i had all my lower teeth out and a temp put right in some pain but not so bad, lasted a couple of days, just make sure you leave the dentures in or you won`t become accustomed to them.mine feel like regular teeth
Reply:I know people who got immediates without any problem except for going for realigns. After a few months they had permanent made when the swelling had gone down and got a better fit that way.
Reply:You're getting 20 teeth pulled in one day? You better have some vicoprofen on hand, cause I had only one pulled ten days ago, and the pain lasted for a week.
Reply:The pain level from my extractions were alright, I had no major pain than expected, didn't even have to use all my pain pills. BTW had 32 extractions done at once. The worst part of the who ordeal was the wait to have all the work done.
Reply:I had to get mine done, also because of an accident. I was ssoooo scared...I honestly think it depends on your pain tolerance. I'll tell you my experience. I woke up that morning, and took a Valium my surgeon had given me, because I was extremely nervous, and I have an anxiety disorder. When we got there (my Mom took me) we sat in the waiting room for like 5 minutes, then I went on back. I layed down, and the nurses covered me with a blanket because I was cold and then they put that big poofy blood pressure checker thingy on my arm, and in the other arm, they put an IV. They placed something over my nose, and then the next thing I remember is waking up the next morning. I don't remember any of the surgery, the ride home, or being at home the rest of the day. A regular extraction doesn't hurt me, usually at all....just an uncomfortable pull, and the extraction of 12 of my teeth didn't hurt. I remember I cried the next morning, because I was hungry, and couldn't eat, because my mouth was so swollen. Everyone is different...I will just tell you to TRY to be as calm as you can. THey're professionals, they know what they're doing. You can ask them any questions about the process, but nobody is going to be able to tell you, without any contradictions what you are EXACTLY going to feel. Good Luck.

Lipstick sticking to dentures?

My wife has an upper denture. When she puts lipstick on, I always have to tell her that she has lipstick on her teeth. Is there a lipstick that doesn't stick to dentures?

Lipstick sticking to dentures?
i think any lipstick would but i dont know fer sure my grandma always looked great ,she would put vaseline on her front teeth and lipstick did notstick to them ---------to each their own!
Reply:Believe it or not non stick cooking spray like butter flavor crisco sprayed lightly on the dentures will keep the lipstick from bleeding . And no, it doesnt taste bad.
Reply:This sounds bad but it really does work...You could tell your wife that after she applies her lipstick to put her pointer finger or lipstick top in her mouth and close her lips around it, then pull it out. Whatever lipstick that would get on her teeth will now come off on her finger or lipstick top. Removing the extra lipstick is how to get it done. Otherwise she will continue to have the problem no matter what kind of lipstick she wears.

Should I get dentures?

After I my last daughter my teeth became very soft and I have had all sorts of problems. I actually have had several fillings that just keep coming out and have had 6 teeth pulled. I so tired of this. I am only 34 but I am considering dentures. It would like nicer, but I am really worried about doing it. Has anyone had all teeth pulled? How bad is it? Also I dentures very uncomfortable to wear? How much do they normally cost? Do you think I should do this?

Should I get dentures?
Hi! I just got your email and I wanted to reply as soon as I could! I've had all my teeth pulled and my dentures for two weeks and two days now. I'm 23. I had it done on a Wednesday morning and I went back to work on Monday morning. The dentist I went to was awesome. Liking your dentist helps a bunch. I searched high and low for my dentist. Anyways, I came in Wednesday morning at 8am and they prepped me. They attempted to give me Nitrous but for some reason, I couldn't breathe it in (which is not normal--I think it had something to do with the massive cold I had.) Then they numbed my entire mouth! That was not pleasant but I'm sure if you've had a tooth pulled, you've gotten the locals to numb the area. I think they gave me about six shots and started to pull my teeth. Granted, my teeth were very infected. When your teeth are infected it's hard to get the area numb. Be sure that if the dentist gives you antibiotics, TAKE THEM!! The pulling of my teeth was excruxiating. Honestly, it was. But that's not normal. Most people don't feel anything but pressure from the pulling. My teeth and gums were so severly infected that they couldn't get completely numb. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone.

If your dentist thinks he can save your teeth, do it. If he can't. Dentures would be your best option. And it sounds like they might be. It is costly. My entire bill is going to be around $8,132. That includes my temporary dentures, which I'm wearing now and my final dentures that I'll get in a couple of months after all the swelling goes down. It is painful but honestly, after the pulling of my teeth, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. That was the most painful part. They put my temp. dentures in immediately after my teeth were all extracted. You do have some bleeding and you're uncomfortable and swollen for a couple of days. By Saturday morning, I was going shopping with my Mom and friends. I was still a little swollen and I talked a little funny. That wore off in a week! If this is something you have to do, buckle down and get it over with. I wait too long. I should've had it done two years ago.

If you have any questions, please email me at matrue@sigecom.net and I'd be happy to address any questions. I know how you feel. You don't know what to do, how expensive it's going to be, how you're going to pay, how bads it going to hurt, when will I be able to eat again, etc. Just ask. I'd love to help you. Good luck.

P.S. This is your choice. Not anyone elses. Talk with your family and close friends. They can help you and hopefully calm your nerves
Reply:I would. theyd look nicer
Reply:you should only get dentures if it is absolutely necessary.

upper dentures are easier to fit than lower dentures. you should save as many teeth on the lower and then get a partial plate. most people have so many problems with a lower denture, it is hard for them to fit correctly thus making it very difficult to eat.

Should I get Dentures....?

Presently I have two teeth aching. I am 39 and sick and tired of my teeth aching, the sensations I get from hot/cold items and the unending teeth grinding I do on a nightly basis. I have always gone to the dentist since I was a kid, have had mouthguards, root canals, gold crowns, fillings, etc. I've paid my dentist thousands of dollars!!! I know with the two teeth hurting now, he's going to want to do a root canal. I've already had 4 back teeth pulled because I HATE root canals and I doubt he'll be able to pull the other two back teeth. Should I just get dentures? My mother had them at 50 and I'm quit certain I'm going to end up with them any way at some point in my life, so why pay for more root canals?? Should I just get it over with and have dentures?? Also, can you tell me if they put you to sleep when they extract the teeth and how painful it is???

Should I get Dentures....?
Dentures are a very serious matter. Discuss your options with your dentist and then seek a second opinion.

I can tell you as a younger denture wearer myself, I did not have many options when the decision was made to pull my remaining teeth. It took a lot of inner strength to move forward and to accept what was happening to me.

If your teeth really are bad enough to need dentures then you should move forward and get them. Research dentists in your area that have a lot of denture experience, they are not as easy to fit or to wear as many people would like you to think.

Wearing dentures is not the end of the world either, I feel I lead just as normal a life as all of my peers. I am 42 and got mine at 35 after a rough pregnancy left its mark.

They can use IV sedation to put you out if you want or they can do it awake in the office. Be sure to discuss your fears and concerns with the dentist, take lots of notes and get your treatment plan in writing. Know ALL of your costs going in to the procedure.

Good luck and feel free to contact me directly if you want more details,

Sandy
Reply:Well, if you are up for getting dentures you'd have to discuss that with your dentist. As for the extracting teeth I know what you are talking about. I have had three teeth extracted in my lifetime, 2 at a young age and 1 in my present age. Sometimes the way dentists pull out teeth varies by the dentist, but you have the option of sleeping gas or going to sleep. I choose the gas because many times before people have never woken up from their sleep with the medicine. With the gas they put this mask on you and you are semi-conscious. With the medicine you are asleep. Both ways are virtually painless but they do give you a shot to numb your mouth and that doesn't hurt much. To me the entire process doesn't hurt at all! Well, I hope that whatever you choose you make the right decision.
Reply:You should try to keep your teeth as long as possible. Dentures are not as functional as your natural teeth and you are so young to have them. When having dentures you have to learn how to speak all over again because your pallet will be completely covered by the denture. If you had all of your teeth out at one time then you could go to an oral surgeon and they can put you to sleep.

I am young but I WANT dentures.?

okay. I really DO want dentures, or implants. either or. My teeth are horrible, and I wasn't ever happy with them and I will completely admit I haven't taken care of them the way I should have, because I have always HATED them. I'm 26 years old, according to 3 dentists I've seen too young for dentures or implants, and they want to save my teeth. I don't want to save them! I honestly don't!

I've always had crooked teeth to start off with, and I drank nothing but soda for YEARS and now they are decaying. Not horribly, its not noticable when I'm talking but even my front teeth are decaying. I've had a root canal on one tooth and my dentist said it doesn't need to be capped...I think it should have been. I just want my teeth replaced. I KNOW its permenant. I don't need all replaced, just want 7 on top. Both my parents have had dentures since they were my age as well and I am well aware that its irreversable. Are there any dentists left that are willing to do it even if they can be saved?

I am young but I WANT dentures.?
When I was 45 years old I was told I was to young for dentures that in 10 years my whole face would age so much by my bones deteriorating. So I started doing research to see if what they were telling was true. It is. Sorry to tell you this but if you think you have problems with your teeth now just wait. It ages you big time.

Truth is some people really do well with dentures but just as many if not more have a really hard time wearing their dentures. Often if you have a really skilled lab and dentist the upper will fit will good suction but not the lowers. They can't get suction but just sit there. The muscles in the face cause the denture to come up. Smiling, talking or eating will make it dislodge. So often people have to resort to gluing them in. Even worse some folks stop wearing them entirely. Doesn't look good at all!

See this link before you suddenly think dentures are your desire for a perfect smile. http://www.doctorspiller.com/DenturesYes...

I have dental implants now because I couldn't save my teeth. Dental implants are terribly expensive yet the implants save the bone from deteriorating and act as tooth roots keeping the bone strong. You can see my new smile in my avatar. Pretty as can be isn't it! I love my new smile but would be remiss to tell you that these feel anything like real teeth. They don't. If you can save your teeth please do it. If they are crooked there are ways to fix that. If they are decayed they might be able to fix that too. If not and you do get denture. I pray that you are one of the few that dentures work well for.
Reply:Please if the dentists you have seen feel there is a way to save your teeth please do it. Dentures for some and I would say a great many people are such a pain in the butt. First your sense of taste is affected. Of course it is when you think of your mouth covered with the plate, and often your dentures do not quite fit right. You are imagining all the trouble going down the drain and a set of shiny new teeth. personally go to the dentis and get the work you need. You will regret it Trust me.
Reply:Maybe you should talk to your dentist about Lumineers. Go to their website and do some research. It's not as drastic but should do the trick for you. It's something to consider anyway. Yes, teeth are very important. That's why the dentists don't want to pull your teeth. My husband is 40 yrs old and the dentist won't pull his either (he's asked). Good luck!
Reply:just tie all your teeth individually to a doorknob. then slam it, pulling out all of your tooth (being drunk may help with this). once all your teeth are removed, then return to the dentist who will then give you some new ones.

note: side effects involve extreme pain, loss of blood, impaired ability to drive a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

disclaimer: please note that i will not be held liable for covering the payments of your fake teeth.
Reply:go to a dentist tell them what you want %26amp; will pay cash

THEY WILL DO IT if not go to another one
Reply:No ethical dentist will pull viable teeth, anymore than a doctor would cut off a healthy limb. If you were to get dentures at your age, you will look 10 to 20 years older than your actual age by the time you are in your 40's. Bone loss and a shrunken jaw line will be evident in time. You body was meant to function with all your teeth present. Removing them will cause health complications far beyond your mouth.

You attitude towards your teeth is more than just not liking them. May I suggest you talk to a qualified counselor to find out why you hate an important part of your body so much.
Reply:Its not as great as you think it is. Dentures are a pain. As nice as it would be to have bright shiny new teeth, that you wouldnt have to take care of, its not the best idea.

If its a money issue, dentists will usually pull the teeth. Because its much cheaper to pull them than to fix them, thats what many people opt for. There are many options, however, and if your teeth are decayed, and you don't have the money to fix them, they will pull them for you.

I would NOT suggest getting dentures, there are many other options. They can type up a plan for you with the financials listed, so that you have a better idea of what everything would cost. Dentures are not cheap either, at least for a good pair.

Make sure that he gargles with warm salt water, ask about pain medication, and keep him hydrated. We found that room temperature fluids were best. This is gross but make sure he has a "spit bottle". My husband bled a lot the first 24 hours. We ended up taking the plate out as he kept gagging on it. Make sure you keep his head elevated and be prepared for him to be in a really sour mood for about 48 hours. I wish you both the very best. Everything will be ok.

How do you un-stick the dental adhesive that was first used with immediate dentures?

I just got immediate top dentures and the periodonist used some type adhesive. I can loosen the denture and can have it mostly out, but it's stuck to the very back gum socket (where the molar was) because of the adhesive.

It's hurts too much to just yank the denture out, so is there a was to dissovle the adhesive? And if not, how long can an immediate denture stay in after it's first put in place (The dentist won't be in his office for a few days)

Thanks in advance

How do you un-stick the dental adhesive that was first used with immediate dentures?
A PERIODONTIST extracted your teeth and placed an immediate denture, with adhesive in it, no less???

Call your general dentist and schedule an appointment. If he's the one that's out for a few days, call the office number anyway. There should be a 'in case of emergency' number on the recording/with the answering service... and use it.

Immediate dentures should be removed (and put back) after 24-48 hours. Although they act as a 'band-aid', you're sure to have what is known as 'sore spots' by now and must be going out of your mind!

If you do manage to remove it by yourself, you may not be able to get it back in, since you will swell a bit from the gums 'resting' after being snuggled in the denture... it's best to have a professional take care of you.........

Best of luck~

I am 26 and have had dentures for a year am I able to get implants at this point?

when I was pregnant with my daughter I produced a calcium deficiency my teeth just broke and fell out rapidly a year ago I rcieved dentures and I hate them I can't eat or talk and my face looks totally different ..... Are implants an option when all my teeth have been gone for a year? I am desperate and cry so much about the way this has affected my life..... Please help me

I am 26 and have had dentures for a year am I able to get implants at this point?
I'm concerned about the rate at which your teeth fell out. Assuming you are healthy, have had all needed medical tests completed and no longer have this particular problem, I see no reason not to proceed with implants. Please note, You need a healthy bone density and the ability to heal for implants to be successful. Would you mind stating the condition you had that caused such a rapid loss of teeth?
Reply:Hi, I know just how you feel. I also lost my teeth during my second pregnancy. I am a bit older but it is still somewhat of an issue.

Dentures are not the end of the world. If they fit properly and you put in the time to learn to wear them they can work quite well.

As long as you have sufficient bone density you should be able to have implants placed. You need to find a qualified implant specialist.

Feel free to contact me off the board if you wish- compare experiences or just discuss this situation.

Is there a procedure to whiten dentures other than soaking or brushing?

I have dentures that are stained from coffee and smoking is there some type of whiteing that I can get or a dentist can do? If so how expensive is it?

Is there a procedure to whiten dentures other than soaking or brushing?
I worked in a nursing home, and I new a woman who would bleach her dentures once a month. She rinsed them extremely well before she put thewm back in. I was a little leary of this procedure. I wouldn't suggest it.
Reply:it's more difficult because the stuff that whitens normal teeth is made for natural teeth, and not dentures.

you could try these new fancy teeth whitening toothpastes...I think there is one made for dentures now, or always has been...I can't remember...but anyway, that's the only thing I know of.
Reply:maybe you could try two denture tablets at once. see if that helps
Reply:I don't think so. Your dentist can remove the stain for you, but all the whitening products that are used would only etch little holes in the material the teeth are made from. (allowing more stain) If the palate of the denture is comfortable, you could have your dentist send them to the lab and they can remove the old teeth and put new ones on. not as expensive as new dentures!
Reply:It is call "Stain Away", you can find it at Longs and some other CVS stores. It has made my dentures look like new for 26 years now. People think they are my real teeth.

Time to get dentures, sad day for me. How do you truthfully feel?

My front tooth chipped in the back yesterday. I knew the time was eventually going to come when I would have to get an upper denture b/c I have only my smile teeth left %26amp; they're not providing a good bite w/ my lower teeth. The day is here now %26amp; I'm very nervous. Need feedback from people re their experiences w/ dentures %26amp; what they think or feel about them. I can't afford what I would prefer....porcelain %26amp; veneers and zoom bleaching my lower teeth and adding one tooth implants on the back sides at the top. So, looks like I have to have them all pulled on top %26amp; I am actually sick to my stomache about all this. I'm worried about them coming loose when I laugh, talk or kiss. I'm worried about how food won't taste as good. I don't want to sleep w/out them in; but, I just read that you need to let your mouth relax occasionally (I had planned to take them out only when I clean them). My beauty is important to me. Serious answers only please. I'm a single adult woman.

Time to get dentures, sad day for me. How do you truthfully feel?
Is there an assistance program that will allow you to get what you would like? Can you take a loan out?

I don't have experience, but I feel like there has to be some way you can avoid pulling all of your teeth and get the best option available.

I'm sorry you have to go through this at an earlier than usual age.
Reply:My husban d had a "smile tooth" that was dark grey and chipped. He went through the same worries as you. He went to a wonderful doc who in one day molded such a perfect fit that none of his clients use denture adhesive. My husband takes it out to eat which as his wife I never realize he even does. He has a wonderful smile and more confidence and does not regret getting them at all.
Reply:i lost my teeth due to a bacterial infection due to diabetes i know how u feel because i had beatiful teeth i had a very hard time dealing with this i had all mine pulled and it took 2 mths for my mouth to heal i didnt smile the whole time my dentist kept assuring me id look the same five visits for the dentures to fit and get measured etc i gave the dentist a pic of me before and he made the teeth exactly the same a little bucked out and he even gave me a crooked tooth down bottom in the front to make them look natural i even got to choose the shade of white i wanted i got them a little off white so they would look natural i worried about them slipping etc but i use the super grip polident and they stay in nice and tight all day food tastes the same why would dentures make food tastes different? my dentist recommended u take them out at night to let your mouth breathe during the whole procedure the only way i could make it through was to keep picturing myself with teeth again i never smiled the whole time im not gonna lie to u it takes awhile to get used to them i put just the bottom in first and got used to them because both sets at once made me gag and its hard to learn how to work both sets together i laughed when my dentist told me this but its true u actually have to think about chewing my biggest problem was learning to relax my jaw and talk normal because i would clench it in fear of them slipping down its a lot of hard work but trust me it will be okay in the end make sure u get another opinion i went to 3 different dentists and got their advice good luck
Reply:Dentures, partials and stay plates are SO much more different now, in comparison to years ago. We have many patients with them, and you can rarely tell anymore. They won't come loose when you talk or eat...as long as you take care of your oral hygiene (yes, there is still hygiene required).
Reply:Oh, yes, I agree, Baby, you need to look good!!! Just take it easy, the dentist is a professional at his or her trade, have them put you under with gas if they will! That always relaxes me to where i can handle having those terrible shots that come at the beginning of the work!!! Just ask for the gas. Some dentists will gladly give it to you to help you relax under the pressure!!! I'd love to see a pic of you after your work!!!
Reply:Getting dentures is quite an emotional shock as well as a big physical change. It is very important to get as much information right up front as you can. Asking questions here is a good place to start. Also seek out people that you know that may have dentures.

Also do your best to maintain a positive attitude toward this. It is a difficult thing for anyone to go through and for a young single woman, it can be even harder- if you let it.

I had to get dentures due to pregnancy complications when I was 35. It was no fun but I worked hard to make these things my teeth and they truly are. I had great support from friends and family and even some co workers who knew what I was going through introduced me to a woman near my age who was a seasoned veteran denture wearer- we became friends very quickly and she helped guide me along.

Foods taste just fine and I can eat anything I want. At times I do have to think about what I am eating but not much.

I do take mine out at night and it is no big deal. Kissing is kissing, good with dentures in, good with dentures out. Different yes but still good.

Feel free to e-mail me if you want and come back with more questions.

How long for dentures to be made?

Hi, does anyone know how long it takes to make full dentures (from the initial appointment with the dentist to fitting)? My mum needs dentures but is worried if she goes to the dentist now they wont' be ready before she goes on holiday in February.

How long for dentures to be made?
If she still has teeth, she would need an appt for 1)exam/x-rays 2)Impressions for the lab to make the teeth then 3)extractions of all her teeth and deliver the dentures. It takes a lab 2-3 weeks to make the dentures once the impressions are taken.

If she already has dentures, it takes at least 3 visits: 1)impressions 2)wax tryins(with the new teeth set in wax) to make sure her bite is correct and she likes her new smile then 3)Delivery of her new teeth. Usually 1-2 wks between each visit.
Reply:She needs templates taking first, then all her remaining teeth out, then she needs to heal, then she needs to go back for fitting. Allow at least 2-3 weeks for this.
Reply:If she explains to the dentist they should be able to hurry it up
Reply:not more than a couple of weeks

How much will dentures cost?

im going to get all my teeth pulled, they give me major problems everyday, and im wondering how much the dentures will cost.. i have medical insurance but i dont think it will cover dentures..

How much will dentures cost?
In Austrlia and upper can denture cost around $3000. I suppose you might get them cheaper or more expensive depending where you are.
Reply:I got a full set when I was 15 for about $400.00, but that didn't include pulling the teeth I had left. I had all my teeth pulled first, then got the dentures about 10 months later. That was over 10 years ago now tho, so the price probly went up some. I still say it was the best thing I ever done cuz my teeth gave me trouble all the time. No problems since I had them all pulled out tho. Hope it works out that way for you too.
Reply:We don't have dental coverage either, but my mom found a place kinda near us in PA where they run about $500.00. She's lookin into maybe gettin me a set from there. I had all my teeth out last year cuz some were bad and I had gum problems and I actually lost some of my front teeth. That was when I was still 15, I'm 16 now. I guess prices are different depending on where you live.

Dentures at 22?

This is really embarrassing, but my dentist says I need dentures at 22. Although I have good hygiene, I also have a progressive gum disease that ruins my teeth fast, and it runs in the women in my family. My teeth look alright on the outside, but they're getting hollow on the inside very quickly. My dentist said I could pay thousands for veneers, fillings, bondings, but I'll still have a lot of pain for the rest of my life. I already drink things lukewarm and can't really eat candy, and it's gotten really boring over the past several years. My fiance has no problem with it and reassures me it won't change his opinion of my looks, but I still feel very self-conscious about it. Anybody else been through this at a young age?

Dentures at 22?
I'm 26 and have full dentures. I basically had the same problem as you, teeth rotting from the inside out. They aren't bad as long as you have someone who knows what they are doing make them. Talk to some people who have used your dentist for dentures, most dentists don't do that many dentures so they sometimes do a crappy job and then suggest implants for their crappy job. Some peoples mouths also just can't seem to cope with dentures, so its not always the dentist fault. I started off being self conscious about it, but no one was able to tell that I had it done, I get compliments from girls on how pretty my smile is, so at least they aren't obvious. The only thing I recommend is getting a couple (2 or more) implants on the bottom when you can afford them, the lower denture sometimes has a mind of its own and doesn't want to stay in place. Its not like its falling out of my mouth when I talk or anything, just eating it pops up on me and sometimes I get food under it and then bite down....OUCH. Another note, I haven't used any adhesive to hold them in, my dentist did a great job at making them so I didn't need any. Don't be ashamed, there are alot more people out there with dentures than you know, they just look a lot better these days and aren't as obvious. Just think, you'll never have a cavity again, no tooth aches, root canals, etc. You can eat ice cream without having sensitive teeth, plus you smile is perfect, you should get to choose the color of your new smile, how you want the teeth placed and all that. If you have a good picture of your smile before you have all of this done, and thats how you want you smile to keep looking, take it to the dentist before he makes them or has the lab make them and tell them thats what you want your smile to look like, they can come pretty close. Good luck.
Reply:Sorry to hear this. Have you considered getting dental implants instead?

They aren't nearly as expensive as they used to be and some insurance plans cover a portion of the cost. You could consider replacing one tooth at a time.

Whatever the outcome, you have to do what's best for your health. Dental pain is awful.

Good luck!
Reply:I know 2 people that had dentures at 21. So they were younger than you by a bit.

I need dentures too (but I am twice your age plus a few more years), but have been stalling because I have tried some partials and just cannot talk right with them in my mouth. The worst part is, that is ALL I do all day is talk (in sales).

If you do not feel that a second opinion is needed, then do what you know you have to. No one will know the difference but you (once your learn to talk with them).

The people that I know that have gotten dentures (and at my age that is a lot of people) they were so happy after they got them. No more pain, no more ugly teeth, no more $$$ shelled out to dentists to fix teeth that were not worth fixing.

Sorry to hear that you have had to go through this at such a terribly young age.
Reply:sorry for ur problem.

2 things i could recomd

1. get second opinon from a periodontist

gum and bone especialist

2.if thay canot do anything consider couple of implants .thy are $ but u'll be very happy.if u get about 4-5 implant on each arch u'll be very happy talk to ur doc about it after seeing a gum especialist
Reply:Dentures take alot of getting used to. If you have some money to invest in yourself then ask about dental implants; if your teeth have to come out the implants will help stablize bone levels and either support crowns and bridgework or they can hold your dentures in place very securely. I would also suggest a second opinion, a periodontist or another dentist. Taking out all of your teeth is drastic at 22...there's no going back.
Reply:I am 29 and the same thing runs in my family. I am hanging in there and have been getting them pulled out as they break off. I know how you feel. I was told I needed them at age 25 but I was also told by people that have dentures that I didn't want dentures either so its sort of a catch 22. It really stinks because people that don't know think its because you don't take care of yourself. I wish you the best and just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.
Reply:I was about 24 when I got my dentures and although it's not the best situation they are not so bad, no more toothaches is really nice! They do take some getting used to at first and you might need fixodent for a while but after you get used to them you get your natural suction that holds them in and they become like a part of you. The only thing I hate is fearing someone will catch me without them in! If you do get them get your teeth all out at the same time and get it over with all at once, don't get them pulled out a few at a time!
Reply:HELLO,

SOMETIMES SOMEONES QUALITY OF LIFE MIGHT BE IMPROVED BY HAVING DENTURES IF ALL THE OTHER JUNK AND WORRIES AS A CONSEQUENCE OF BAD TEETH IS RESOLVED. IF AT 22 DENTURES ARE NEEDED FOR A BETTER LIFE, THEN FOLLOW YOUR DENTIST'S ADVISE AND JUST DO IT.
Reply:er..not problem there. Have you tried root fillings or nerve fillings
Reply:not at a young age but still rather traumatic

i have to do the same thing due periodontitis

which sounds like the same problem you have

i did not answer your question

but

you are not alone

i am not looking forward to it but i am sure i will be glad once it is done

best of luck to you
Reply:you are young and that is god for having dental implants, talk with your dentist about the implant to see his opinion
Reply:No teeth is a lot better than a lot of bad teeth. I got dentures at 15 because my teeth were falling apart so fast the dentist couldn't keep up. They were dark and hollow inside and kept breaking, kinda like yours I guess. Anyways, I had them all taken out and got dentures, and I never been sorry I decided to go that route. It runs in my family too. It was kinda strange at first bein in high school with teeth that can come out, but it wasn't really bad like I thought it might be. If your teeth are that bad, go for the dentures, you won't be sorry.
Reply:At age 46 I was told not to get dentures. I was told that losing the roots to the teeth will cause my bones to deteriorate and I would end up with more problems down the road. So I got implants. Implants though costly are an investment in my future. The implants themselves keep the bone good and strong. The teeth that are screwed onto my implants are more beautiful than my natural teeth ever were and my smile is so very beautiful.

So if they tell me at 46 not to go the route of dentures I would think the same would apply to you. I would go to a univeristy that specializes in dental issues or something. There has to be help for you out there on the internet do some surfing and see what you can find out. Try your best to make dentures your last resort.

Often (I am member's of a denture site) it is totally a normal problem for people's lower denture not to stay in place. The muscles in the face fight the lower plate so most end up having to glue them in or go without them. Now that would be a tragedy for you.
Reply:Don't feel bad because my now ex boyfriend needed dentures when he was in his 20's.

Dentures! help?

i just got lower dentures. and they are uncomfertable. is it okay to not wear them sometimes? they make my mouth sore. overtime will it make my jaw messed up? and how long?

Dentures! help?
I need a little bit more information. When did you get the dentures? When were your lower teeth removed? When is your follow up appointment with your dentist?
Reply:U should wear them 2 days. before u go to the dentist for your adjustment (u should have one scheduled but if u don't call and tell them u need a adjustment). The reason u need to wear them for 2 days before is to create a sore spot, where their hurting, so your dentist knows where to adjust. Be patience, get adjustment and they will get allot better
Reply:You feel uncomfortable since you just got your denture.. This is a common scenario don't worry.. after few weeks of using it, you'll get used to it %26amp; be more comfortable.. Mouth sores is so common for a new dentures since your mouth hasn't yet adjusted from it.. To avoid the mouth sores, always remember to take the dentures off in the evening.

Try to use betadine gargle using a cotton swab in the area where your sore was to heal it.. You can also use an ointment intented for mouth sores (just ask the pharmacist whats ideal for your age, conditions for it would differ in types of needs).. %26amp; one more thing, try to visit your dentist too so your dentist can check the site where you have sores to make it less pressured to avoid inaccurance of the sores in the same area as well.

By the way, for you to get used to your new denture, try to place a candy inside your mouth that can help a lot.. in few days you'll realized you're more comfortable now with your new denture..

Dentures help?

new dentures make my top lip look fat can they trim it so idoesnt look swollen and it show the top of the gum when i smile so you can tell that there false teeth

Dentures help?
Why would you want people to know here false when you smile??? But yes they can trimit down so your lip dosen't look so swollen but having it cut down enough to show your gums might cause them to be to short and you would lose suction and they'd fall out, people would know thier false then HUH!
Reply:It make you think its big. Went through the same thing. Makes you feel like Mr. Ed I know. You will get used to it.

I got mine a year ago and still can't wear mine.

Your gums are probably still swollen too.
Reply:I had no teeth at all for almost a year before I got mine, and I never did get used to them, so I don't wear them. I think they're still at my parents' house in a drawer somewhere....I got them when I was 15.
Reply:You do not say how new the dentures are. I suggest you wait until most of the swelling has gone down and you have had a few relines or adjustments. Make you dentist aware of your concerns. Sometimes they can re contour the dentures so they are less bulky. It is a big adjustment and you are very aware and self concious of everything that is going on with your dentures.

Not everyone is that observant and in most cases, unless they know what they are looking at, they probably would not assoicate your appearance with dentures.

Take it one day at a time.

Should i be ashamed kissing with my dentures????

Hi,im very curious to get quick, honest responses from "MATURE" ppl only.Im a 23yr old female, ive finally got together with the guy of my dreams...a few weeks ago we had our 1st"druken"kiss,which we really enjoyed,he even said im a very, very good kisser, which i dnt know wether its bcoz we had been drinking or what.Anyway he wants to kiss me again, but im so scared that he might tell i have dentures.I dont want to tell him NEVER,but just want to know since i have upper 3 dentures, can he feel the roof of my mouth,or tell if i have them?As it does feel very different to the real thing, with dentures its plastic, not flesh.I feel ashamed and uncomfortable when he wants to tongue-lock,coz,as i suck on his tongue-i believe he might be able to tell. This might sound stupid, but it has totally destroyed my self-confidence.Pls help,i need to know:can a guy tell when french kissing a girl with dentures(upper),and how does it honestly feel, can u feel the roof of her mouth with your tongue when kissing?

Should i be ashamed kissing with my dentures????
i have a full upper denture, and i kiss my man all the time. but of course he knows about it. dont start off a relationship with worries and lies. it is a lie if you dont tell him about the denture. if he is mature, it should not bother him.
Reply:yes lets hope he didnt though
Reply:good luck with that one i dont have dentures but i sure your boyfriend is fine with it
Reply:He can't tell. Men are pretty stupid about things like that.
Reply:I am sure he has other things on his mind when you are tongue wrestling and dentures would be the last thing he would be thinking about.

Have fun.

Dentures or braces?

My teeth are very crooked, one tooth is almost totally behind another tooth, is it cheaper to have the front ones pulled and replaces with permanent dentures, or to get braces?

Dentures or braces?
Even crooked teeth are more functional than dentures. I would suggest you consider the braces, if it's just your looks you are concerned with. There are other options that you can discuss with your dentist as well. It's quiet possible you may be able to do crown work and prep the teeth into alignment, or a bridge would be a better alternative than that of dentures. Although your teeth are crooked, I'm sure you can still eat, bite into food and taste with no trouble. These are things that denture wearers have trouble with. Age is something to consider also, most younger patients have difficulty adjusting to dentures, whereas the older patients are thankful to have them. I've never had any of my denture wearing patients say they were happy to wear dentures, but all of them say they wish they had taken better care of their teeth. Find another option, there are plenty of alternatives. Seek the advise of your Dentist, he will help you and believe it or not, understand and care. Good luck.
Reply:get braces. even if they cost more, at least you'll still have your real teeth.
Reply:Get braces don't get dentures. You need to save your teeth I know people who are in their 80's who are still going to the Dentist.
Reply:braces are far better than artificial teeth...
Reply:Never go on the cheap with your teeth. They can never be replaced! Love and cherish every single one of those pearly whites. Fix, fix, fix. Best is to get the braces. It may hurt the pocket book a bit - but in the end you can always smile in the mirror and know what you are looking at is your own precious teeth.
Reply:Braces. I don't know the cost difference for sure where you live and who you'd go with but with braces you'd have an amazing smile, and they'd be your teeth! If you decided to extract the teeth and then do implants and then do crowns that would be expensive, plus it wouldn't correct any of the other problems. Braces fix all the alignment, plus they help with oral hygiene, when teeth overlap it makes cleaning in between them difficult and decay is more likely to occur.
Reply:i wouldn't recommend pulling a tooth unless you needed to, so i would go with braces. depending on what tooth is really crooked, having it pulled may mess up your bite a lot too. if your teeth are that crooked and crowded there probably wouldn't be enough room to work with to make a normal looking partial denture anyways. good luck. :)
Reply:if you wanted long term natural effect...than you should go for braces...but there is a setback...you will have to live with it for more than a year...every month...then doctor will tightened it up a bit...until the satisfactory result achieved....

for denture...it is so hard to take care off...but if you have no time to wait..then go for it...
Reply:I can tell you from experience...if your teeth are healthy, and the only problem is they are not straight, do everything in your power to keep them in your head forever...dentures are a real pain in the ****. They will never work as well as your natural teeth, and no matter how bad your teeth may look to you, if they dont hurt...save them.
Reply:Depends on your age I believe. If you are stil young enough it is best to go for the braces.
Reply:Go for the braces. You'll be thankful later on in life when you can actually chew food with real teeth...
Reply:I wonder what you mean by permanate dentures. If you are talking implants, they would be more expensive but the braces would still be preferable as everyone has said before me. If you are talking dentures, forget it!!! Take out a loan to get what you need. You also might consider caps on the teeth that are so bad. Get a couple of opinions from a couple of dentists.
Reply:Keenan;

Even though braces may seem like a pain, the benefits long term will outweigh the alternative. People with dentures have a reduced ability to effectively chew food. There are new procedures where they implant into the jaw a base in which they can attach a dental plate. But this is a very involved surgery and very expensive procedure. Unless you also suffer from associated illness in you mouth, almost any dentist will tell you that it is best to keep your teeth. You have only 1 set so take care of them. Remember to brush and floss every day.
Reply:You should do every thing possible to keep your natural teeth. They are better that the best dentures or implants. The cost should not be the determining factor.
Reply:Never ever pull a healthy tooth.Nothing can replace your natural teeth.Get a second job, come up with the money ,take care of your teeth without pulling them.I am a RDA,have been working for 12 years.I have seen a lot of cases, trust me.

Dentures or false teeth?

i am interested in getting dentures, i am only 23.. my mom says not to do it, but when i was at the dentist last he said that alot of my teeth arent worth saving because they are rotted on the inside.. i mean i have a nice smile, but i have alot of cavaties from soda and they arent very white either... i just want a gorgeous smile, bright white and if i get all these cavaties drilled and teeth pulled. why not just get them all gone and get a nice set of fake ones?? atleast that way i can keep a white smile withour all the hassle.... give me your opinion..... thanks

Dentures or false teeth?
i just got my dentures 8 months ago. i had a horrible smile. i thought there was going to be alot of pain. but i was surprised when there wasnt. i got my new teeth put in the same day. i didnt eat anything the rest of the day. was not hungary. the next few days, i ate alot of pudding and icecream, (i now no longer eat pudding, as i now hate it) after the 5th day, i started eating solids because i was starving. as time goes on, you will be able to eat most of the same things you ate before. (with out the pain, oh joy joy) it takes like 6 months for your gums to heal completly, as they are shrinking slowly. you will have to go in periodicly to get your denture re-lines. but it is not bad. you will then either get a permanent re-line in your denture, or you will get fitted for a permanent denture, depends on what plan you have. best of luck to ya
Reply:ask for venneers!
Reply:if that is what will make you comfertable i would do it..a firend of mine had this done at 24 due to a problem with soft teeth..she was always in pain and her teeth looked awful.....just do your research and talk with your dentist ...be prepared for a recovery period and knonw once it is done it cannot be reversed...you can always look into permanant false teeht in whish they actually attach small screw in your jaw and the teeth screw in......
Reply:You are way too young for 'false teeth', and dental medicine is way beyond them now. A competent dentist will never suggest them as a first solution.

I'm familiar with this sort of dental work. First, keep your good teeth, have the hopeless ones removed, then have DENTAL IMPLANTS rather than false teeth. It isn't cheap but the results are the same as natural teeth. A combination of implants and bridges may be in order.

You must find an good oral surgeon who specializes in this work. The results will be a dazzling.
Reply:Please realize you lose bone when you lose teeth. It slowly dissolves away over the years. If you are 23, you have 50-60+ years ahead of you! (Lord willing). I see it all the time. Elderly people wanting the dentist to make a miracle with their denture. The bone ridge is nearly flat and they expect the dentist to create a denture that will stay put. If you lose too much bone, implants can not be placed, so that will no longer be an option. I would at least try to salvage some of your teeth. Invest some money now into them and get implants, bridges and crowns/veneers. Partial dentures are one option, but they have their own set of problems to them. Number one thing you have to do if you decide to save your teeth: LAY OFF THE SUGAR DRINKS! If you invest the time, money and effort to fix your teeth, please don't ruin them with soda pop, and too much sugar in other drinks and food.

Dentures are not a miracle cure, you will have several sets made throughout your life. To extract your teeth will cost approx. $100 or more per tooth. Dentures are $5000 plus depending on your area. If you worked on 1 or 2 teeth in a year you would eventually have a health mouth. I don't know what pain you are dealing with of course, but just trying to get you to take "little bites" at repairing your teeth if you are feeling overwhelmed by it all. I hope this gave you some pros and cons to think about anyway.
Reply:you can have a porcelain jacket but you have to undergo rootcanal treatment first to kill the nerves
Reply:It is good to hold on to ur natural teeth for as long as u can because some people dont get on well with false teeth( dentures) and u may be one of them, plus with dentures u cant taste ur food probably, and u have to remove them at night which is a pain! there are some good info about teeth in the link below.

Dentures last for how long?

Silly question I know, but how long is an accepted period of time for a set of dentures????

Dentures last for how long?
I worked as a denture tech for several years...and the answer is that it varies. The teeth that are placed in the acrylic base come in different price ranges, in OK and AR area, a cheap set of dentures will be $300 and an expensive set $1100. We would warranty the cheap set for 2 years and the expensive ones for 10 years. Of course, one's eating habits will change this...had one patient who loved hard candy and quickly worn out one side. Also, over time, the alveolar ridge (the bone in the gums) resorbs (shrinks at a different rate for different people) and the denture no longer fits properly and adhesive or relining becomes necessary. The alveolar ridge won't shrink nearly as fast if the denture is removed at night. Hope this helped some.
Reply:till you sit on them or swallow them .forever i guess
Reply:I have had mine for the last 16 yrs and still good and dentist says I don't need a new set yet
Reply:Maybe 10 years or so. As you get older your gums shrink so they will not last forever.
Reply:Forever if you leave them in a Glass
Reply:let me put it this way my face is going to wear out before my teeth
Reply:As many have said above, this is entirely dependent on the individual and the basic quality of the dentures. I've seen dentures 30 years old that look like new and 5 years old that look like they were ... um ... 30 years old.

Dentures question?

Recently a dentist recommended that my friend get dentures. The dentist recommended a color and they ended up looking yellow. She was very upset and complained to the dentist that she did not like the color. The dentist told her she could fix them but if they went whiter they wouldn't look natural. Now she is worried about getting them whiter cause she doesn't want them to look bad, but she really hates the yellow coloring she has. ( BTW she doesn't smoke) I told her that I thnk with everyone getting teeth whitening nowadays she could just pass them off as being whitened. What do you all think?

Dentures question?
With full dentures, I say the patient is in charge! You are not trying to match one tooth so that it blends in with all the rest, so go for whatever shade you want.

If I think it is just crazy, I might express that opinion, but it is ultimately the patient's decision.

Now... I don't know how your friend and the dentist will resolve the color issue. There should have been a "try in" visit when the denture was set up in wax. It was at this visit that the patient could have said that the color was too yellow and the change could have been made for free. If your friend stated that the color was not good at THAT visit and the dentist said it would be okay, I hope that the dentist is willing to admit it and will eat the lab cost for remaking the new dentures. If your friend said that the color was okay, then it's going to be tough to have them redone for a reduced fee.
Reply:There are MANY (20-30) shades of teeth to choose from, maybe there is something in between. In the end, it is the patients self image that matters. Too white or too yellow, she won't smile at all if she doesn't like them...and that would be both unnatural and most unfortunate. Maybe you could go with her to the dentist and give support and another opinion.
Reply:As Sam says, there should have been a try-in stage. Sometimes I let my patients take the try-in home to show family and friends to get their reactions re the colour.

However, always give the patients what they want or they'll never be happy. I just make careful notes in their records to cover myself.
Reply:I agree with the docs. I am a denture tech and there are many shades of teeth to choose from. As well as different colors of the "gum" material that can be used. The dentist should have had a shade chart to show your friend different shades that she could choose from, instead of picking one out for her. It's not the dentist that has to look at her smile every day and not be happy with the color of her teeth. HOpefully the doc will eat teh cost and have the denture remade. Afterall...your friend is probably paying good money for her denture

Dentures info?

I was considering dentures full top and bottom can someone tell me the cost and how long of a process it is. I was also wondering after my teeth are extracted is it possible to get a temp set so i don't have to walk around with no teeth until i heal?

Dentures info?
I must give a tip that in eastern countries prostondonty is cheaper tha in USA or Europea. (Not because that make bad prostesis, because dolar and euro is precious than their money) And also ur dentist will make u immediate prostesis until she/he finishes that prosthsesis u pay for. Without an immediate prostesis ur dentist wont let u go home-dont worry cuz if u go home with nothing that protects ur prepeared teeths, sure u ll have pulp problems.

I am thinking about getting dentures made at george brown collegein toronto. They charge around 250. a plate.?

I only need lower as I already have upper. I have had no bottom teeth for years. I understand these will be made by students but it seems pretty cheap. Is the material cheap? 250. is still alot of money for me on a limited income. Has anyone had dentures from there?

I am thinking about getting dentures made at george brown collegein toronto. They charge around 250. a plate.?
I haven't had dentures made there...but I would imagine they have suprvisors who monitor the work done.

$250 is a REAL good price.Often it's double that...at the very least.
Reply:Believe me, when it comes to dentures, especially lowers (they're much harder to fit), you don't want cheapest cause you get what you pay for. On the other hand, if you go high end, you can't get what you pay for. You want those chompers to fit tight and fit right!

600 - 1000 bux, I'd say
Reply:I live in the USA but that sounds almost TOOOOO cheap. But then again we have students that take automotive classes %26amp; you can let them work on your car for free,(body work ,or mechanical ) and it ussually comes out better than most repair shops will do. I'd give it a chance as they will most likely be putting more effort into perfection than a shop that has 2000 patients and dont care if you come back.
Reply:No... I haven't.

My suggestions:

1) Call George Brown or visit the facility.

2) Ask for a technical representative or an instructor, and have her/him explain what differences you can expect... if any.

3) Ask her/him what material %26amp; process they use, and how is it different from the industry standards.

4) You can double check this information by calling a competitor... ask the salesperson to explain any differences there might be, and your potential risks (if any) if you were to buy from George Brown.

Hope this helps.
Reply:No problem with the price as they do not charge for labor. All lower dentures are a bear as they don't have suction. You will probably get a better fit there than in many offices but will take a lot more time. Go for it if you have a the time!! Doc W

Where can I get affordable dentures, with a payment plan?

I am a young woman with bad teeth. It really bothers me, not to mention the pain. I need to get dentures. Am looking for somewhere affordable or that will let me make payments. Credit not so good. Help!

Where can I get affordable dentures, with a payment plan?

Check them out, they are very affordable.
Reply:It might help others answer if you at least give a city and state where you are located.

Many dentists offer extended payment plans through third parties where you can have as much as 4 or 5 years to pay, like any other consumer debt. Ask.
Reply:I agree with Dr.Sam.You have to check around to see who will let you make payments.Believe it or not alot of places will do that, you just have to find them.Places like Affordable Dentures want the money up front. You can check out carecredit.com and see if you can get help there even thought you said you have bad credit, you never know.

Does anyone know anything about dentures?? Need Help!!?

I recently got upper and lower dentures. It's been a month and I still can't chew with them. I feel like I have a huge blob of acrylic and plastic in my mouth and my jaw and gums are always sore. Will I ever get used to these things?

Does anyone know anything about dentures?? Need Help!!?
yes do what she said....man i can't wait to have dentures.
Reply:Yes you will get used to them just practice will small biutes of soft stuff for a while If it doesnt help then go back to ur dentist and maybe they can help file them down some to make them thinner
Reply:I'm a dentist.

First off, are they partial or complete dentures? It makes a big difference. Also, are they immediate dentures, or permanent ones? And, did you recently have extractions performed?

New dentures almost always need some adjustment. Sometimes they are a little too thick in areas, and the pink denture base impinges on the soft tissues (especially if extended too far back). Really, the denture base shouldn't be thicker than about 2mm to 3mm at any point, except perhaps at the flanges where it might be just a hair thicker. Your dentist would gladly adjust them for you if you told him where they were uncomfortable.

Since you mentioned soreness, it is verly likely that some adjustments need to made. Your dentist can use a special kind of paste called pressure indicating paste that he/she can apply to the insides of the dentures. Upon placing the dentures in your mouth, having you bite, and removing them, the areas where your soft tissues are receiving too much prssure are readily identifiable, and can be adjusted easily.

Also keep in mind that the soft tissues in your mouth will, like any other part of your body, lay down more keratin (i.e. become a little calloused) and will not be as prone to getting sore.

As far as chewing goes, it is imperative that you remember that dentures are not teeth. They just look like teeth. Dentures are a solid piece that, when pressed on one side, the other side will be affected. That means that you cannot chew on just one side. When you chew, you must divide the bolus of food equally on both sides, otherwise you'll find the denture disloding when you eat...especially the lower denture which inherently has less retention in your mouth.

Finally, with regard to the "blob of acrylic", it is also possible that you haven't been wearing your denture enough to get used to it. If you find yourself hypersalivating with the denture in your mouth, it means you're not wearing it enough and you will never get accustomed to having it in your mouth.
Reply:Yeah I will, cuz I haven't done it ever in my life really!
Reply:You need to see your dentist and get an adjustment. The adjustment will stop some of the discomfort. Your gums are going to shrink alot and you will probably need a new set of dentures within the year. They take a while to get used to.
Reply:well its normal...but you can get used to it after a month...its normal to have sores..because its the first time your gums was exposed to a foreign hard acrylic...pretty soon youll get used to it.

How do you whiten older dentures?

My wife has a set of approximately 30 year old dentures that have been badly stained by coffee and the like. Our grandchildren are beginning to say that she has green teeth and she wants whiter looking teeth. Because they fit really well she does not want to replace them. She has tried all of the soaking products to no avail. Is there any thing over the counter that will whiten them? If not can a dentist do anything other than make her a new set?

How do you whiten older dentures?
You may try some bleach, but you can't whiten fake teeth. If those are 30 years old a new pair may be what she needs.
Reply:See the dentist.
Reply:My mother, father, and grandmother swear by a bleach/water solution soak overnight. I can remember my grandmother doing this since I was a kid. I'm now 45. And her dentures are pearly white! Oh she uses the typical over-the-counter daily cleaner; but at least once a week, she soaks those dentures in a strong bleach and water solution in her "chopper hopper" overnight to help keep them white and remove stains. And to disinfect she says. Just make sure you rinse and brush them well the following morning.
Reply:see the dentist, they may have a lab willing to replace the few teeth in the existing denture with new ones. I donno how much it will cost or if they willing to do but it is possible (they fix the fallen out teeth on the denture by placing a new tooth in and recooking the denture)

Dentures from Mexico ?

I need a set of dentures top and bottom that means they have to extract all my teeth at once. Since everything is so expensive here I want to go to Mexico. Did anybody go there and how was the experience

Dentures from Mexico ?
Mexican dentistry is the same there as is here...some is good, some is bad. But, you cannot beat the cost, that is for sure. Many of my friends head down to Tiajuana for medical work, ... teeth, especially plastic surgery...all have had great work done at greatly lower costs than can be found here...and besides, you get a vacation..sore mouth and all...think of it this way...cold margaritas are very cheap there...you can get all but drunk to get rid of the pain...and, believe it or not, Mexico has pain pills just like they do here. Go for it...what have you got to loose...besides your teeth, that is. Good luck The only problem I can forecast is...many people, with new dentures, have some real fit problems that don't go away without rebuilds or new....Not all, but some. Hopefully, you will not be one of them...the only advantage in local dentures is the fix is free. But, they will take casts of your mouth as it is before your teeth are extracted, the dentures will be built based upon that cast...Yes, your gums will receed in time, but everyone's do. You will have to have new ones at some date in the future....go back to Mexico..what happens in Mexico stays in Mexico!
Reply:The don't use teeth there, they have little pet parrots that chew food and spit it into your mouth. Its true it was on discovery channel. I believe everything they say.
Reply:Yes go to http://www.escapeartist.com/efam/43/Dent... There are clinic there that specializes in just that!Dental Work In Mexico: Getting New Choppers On The Cheap ~ By Mexicojerry
Reply:Don't listen to cheeseballs. Apparently that person doesn't know what hardship is and prefers to joke about serious matters such as this. In answer to your question, my sister got hers done there for $250.00 and they were great. Only thing is that she didn't go back for the final fitting and that's her fault. You have to keep your appointments. Hers are a bit loose because she didn't go back. She only had the top denture but her experience was very good.
Reply:Don't go to Mexico. Ever heard the expression you get what you pay for? I would recommend that you go to a dental school in your area. You will get excellent quality dentures that fit and they will be about 1/3 the cost of a private practice dentist. There are denture clinics that make dentures in one day for about $200 each but again we are moving into the realm of "you get what you pay for".

Dentures drivng me nutz?

I have a full set of dentures the bottoms don't bother me I have a really bad gag reflex and the top ones drive me nuttz. I can only wear them a few hours then start gagging and out thye come. I've had them for a while now and still having trouble with them. Can someone give me some advice? Am I just weird?

Dentures drivng me nutz?
No you are not weird at all. It is normal to have those type of problems when your dentures don't fit properly.

The only solution would be to see a denturist and get their expert opinion.

They could recommend a more fitting paste for your mouth and dentures, or they might have to alter your top dentures for a better fit.
Reply:GET SOME GRILLZ
Reply:It sounds like they may not actually fit your mouth correctly. You should go back to the doc who made and fitted them for you and talk to them about the problem you're having. They may be able to adjust them to make them fit better, which might solve your problem. Good luck!
Reply:I know someone who had the same problem. But the dentures were too big. Maybe you should get them resized.
Reply:I have a really bad gag reflex and had a lot of trouble when I first got mine. Most of mine was in my head though! :-) Try gluing them in with some Fixodent or Polygrip--whatever you want to use. Then they can't come out. Also, it might be possible for your dentist to grind them down some where they're not as thick or go back as far in your mouth. Definetly talk to your dentist if the glue doesn't help. That's what they're there for. Mine don't bother me at all anymore and I've had mine about 4 months. Good luck!

Reply:HA some of the answers to this are funny!

Seriously though i doubt your dentures are too big, however, they may be going too far back on the top, and the dentist may be able to take a little bit from the back edge so it isn't tickling your soft palate.

Is a while only a couple of months? because it may require some persistance and practice.

So yea its a bit nuts to have problems with the top and not the bottom, but the first things i'd try would be 1.take it to the dentist and get the denture thinned out in the palate (so its presence is not so noticable) 2. get a little taken off the back edge (not too much though or it might lose a bit of suction) and 3. Persistance! practice wearing it for 2 hours then have a break

then wear it for 2 and 10 minutes

build up your tolerance

do something to keep your mind off it. its bloody hard but its might be the only way.
Reply:Hey the main reason could be that your upper denture is over extended near the palate. So whenever there is too much of palatal movement you start gagging.

Probably all you have to do is go to your dentist and ask him to trim the upper denture from behind.
Reply:drop some change on implants. it's about $30k but you won't have to worry about the palatal coverage and you don't have to take them out ever. it's expensive but worth it!

DENTURES uncomfortable, I cant stand to have them in, Does this get any better ????

I am only 38 years old but due to several chronic illnesses' that affect my immune system, I lost all of my teeth, they all had to go....I have had dentures 7 mos now, I hate having them in, I work out of the home, so I never put my teeth in...I know It bothers my boyfriend, but having my top palate covered makes my mouth itch, I cant taste food as well, I HAVE to use Fixodent, as My illness causes dry mouth.....

I cannot keep the bottom ones in at all, my lower ridge in front may be 1/8 inch, so they love to flip out even with a fixative....

Dont get me wrong they are fitted very well and look fantastic in, I just have to smile while in complete uncomfortable, irritation.

Will I ever get used to these things??? To where I do not feel like I have a thick retainer in my mouth ?? LOL

Raven

DENTURES uncomfortable, I cant stand to have them in, Does this get any better ????
yes it can get better, but while it is irritating and itchy it probably won't.

if you are getting itchyness you may have a slight candida infection (probably made worse by your lack of saliva) you should get that treated. try soaking your dentures in a quatre cup of white vinegar and water at night to help kill any candida growing on your denture.

the taste part is something you have to get used to, but perhaps if they were a bit thinner you wouldn't be like such thick retainers.

Perhaps you should see a specialist prosthodontist ( a dentist who has specialized in making dentures) they may be able to make you a more balanced denture that doesn't flip out so much.

The other very expensive option you might like to consider is implant supported dentures... basically a couple of titanium screws in your jaw which clip your dentures on... that way they can be a lot smaller and not cover all your palate and they won't move around, you won't need fixative either. you may want to look into that.
Reply:Raven, you do not say whether those dentures are the ones put in immediately after your teeth were extracted or a set placed after healing took place.

Most likely you need to see the dentist and explain all of your concerns to him or her. If they are only your immediate dentures then you should get fitted for a more permanent set that will fit the contours of your healed mouth a lot better. They will be less bulky than what you currently have. The use of the adhesive may be contributing to your dry mouth condition, if it is all medical related I have heard that there are rinses you can use to help with the dry mouth but a properly fitting denture usually does not require adhesives.

With the lower, only wearing it and practicing with it will change how you feel about it. Your dentist may suggest something like an implant system to help stabilize the lower denture, It all has to start at the dentist so make an appointment and see whats what!
