Bone shaved for dentures to fit?????

My uncle will be getting full dentures soon. But his doctor said that he needs to have certain pieces of bone (on the upper) shaved down first, or they wont fit.





I have seen these bone pieces, and they stick out, very pointy and obvious.





Will this cause him a lot of pain? Is this a normal proceedure?

he need to do it, it will create under cuts for his denture %26amp; it will hurt him when he removes %26amp; puts his dentures. It is know as osteoplasty. Its a minor surgery, like extraction %26amp; painless after anestesia.
Reply:Yes it is important to have the bone recontoured in order to have the correct fit of the denture. The bone is called torus, which is a normal overgrowth of bone that some people have. It is harmless and only becomes a problem when facing going into a full denture. The importance of having it done will ensure the "suction" action needed to hold a upper denture in the mouth. Forces of gravity will drop it if not good suction.


The procedure is uncomfortable, as would suspect, but people usually do well with it.

Reply:This is a normal part of the healing process and happens often. Sometimes people are able to pull the bones out on their own. The dentist will probably numb him so he won't feel anything.
Reply:bone shuld have been smoothened at the time of extractions, called osteoplasty, but it was not done so now when the gums are shrinking because they are healing these bones are sticking out. These have to be removed surgically, ususally not a painful procedure. Local anesthesia is required. After the removal the healing is pretty quick.Usually a week. Denture will not fit if the boney projections are not removed.
