My grandma just got new dentures and the office manager/techie, told my grandma to soak her dentures in Clorox and water. I have never heard of such a thing, is this really safe? won't the Clorox erode the gums of the dentures over time? how can you be so sure that the clorox is gone and safe enough to put back in your mouth, ewwww that would taste so gross. I'm looking for some answers please!
Using Clorox to clean dentures?
I'm a dentist.
Chlorox is safe to use on dentures in that, provided you rinse the dentures thoroughly afterward, it will not poison the denture wearer.
However, bleach will, over time, fade the denture's colors--including the color of the denture's gingiva. This is not a desirable effect.
A good brushing is more than enough to clean a denture.
Reply:NO! Use a denture cleaner, it is safer!
Reply:NO. Bleach will ruin the dentures. Only use a denture cleanser.
Reply:Complete dentures only can be soaked in a homemade solution of 1 tsp Clorox, 2 tsps Calgon (water softener NOT Calgonite detergent or bath oil), 6oz water.
dentalgentlecare.com is the site I got this info from. Go to it and read all the care info for dentures.
Reply:hi a iam a dental laboratory technician i actually construct dentures it is never recommended use Clorox for the cleaning of dentures first it will errode teeth denture that is made out of acrylic and some time fiber glass so i will recomend you some water inside the cup and rinse with a normal tooth brush every night and after eat.
Reply:You can use a very dilute solution as suggested by Anita and this will do no harm. The commercial denture tablets and powders are just fancy bleach, after all.
Reply:I don't know if they're safe for dentures. I do know that my dentist told me once that he had one patient that would mix water and chlorox and rinse her mouth with it. That sounds dangerous to me, so I have never and will never try it.
