Hi, I have been told I need dentures within the next 12 months as, due to a genetic disorder, my teeth are loose and gums are receding. I go to the hygenist so they can keep an eye on them but I 'm at a point where I'm wondering whether to just go and get them pulled now? They look awful, gapping and I'm really self consious of them. As I'm only 33, it's a hard dicision to make and I don't know what to expect. Has anyone out there been in the same situation and what did you do? By the way, I've been told I can't have implants as I have lost too much bone density
Any advice would be great....... Thanks xx
Dentures - yes or no?????????
At your condition veneers would not be an option. Sounds like your are destined for dentures. However, I would get a second opinion about imlants. Bone grafts are possible to make someone a more likely implant candidate. They are expensive but just two implants can make dentures so much more comfortable.
Reply:is there any way you can get veneers if not do what you have to make your teeth look good!
Reply:You should get a 2nd opinion!
Reply:i had the same problem...and it was the best thing i ever done....i had it done right away and healed quickly...good luck !
Reply:ive got my own healthy teeth but if things were to go wrong for sure i would get dentures i dont think there a problem. even though i ALWAYS wear makeup and make myself look nice if it came down to it between vanity or health i would always choose health. look after yourself babes hope things turn out good for you.xxxxxxxxxmwahxxxxxxxxxxxx
Reply:a few years back my friend at the age of 24 had to have this done herself for the same reason....she was reluctant at first and it took some getting used to and some time to get the dentures to fit just right...since then she said she never knew what it was like to wake up without a tooth ache...noone can ever even tell she has them..they always ask if she had braces as a kid becasue her teeth look so nice....her future husband at the didnt even know the first 6 months she dated him untill she told him..save yourself the pain and the money and look into it......might be a good option
Reply:Get the dentures I too am 33 I have had my dentures since I was 28. It was the best decision I made, no one even knows that I have dentures unless I tell them. My only advise, ask to see photos of other peoples work, or see if you can talk to someone that has had their dentures made by that dentist. Mine are wonderful and match my old smile almost exactly, minus the decay and gaps.
Reply:I had a similar problem, I had all my teeth pulled at age 29, I've had dentures from that time on, I'm now 40 and I do not regret any of the choices I made on this, look into 1-800-dentist, they do good work at reasonable prices!!
hope this helps.
Reply:I know how u feel, Dentistry has advanced very much in the recent years and dentUres are not what they used to be, the material and techniques used now making them is very good these days, they look good and natUral and can feel very comfortable, if u r not happy with ur teeth and trust ur dentist to do a good job, try dentures and forget about the stigma attached to it( as u r young) think about how much better u would feel about yourself with a good set of teeth.
Take care

Reply:You have already received a lot of good advice here. Getting at least one more opinion is wise. If you are already losing bone tissue to disease and extracting your teeth will halt it, then do it sooner rather than later.
I have full dentures and was given my choice of when to have them done. I had just had a baby so I waited a little to get him settled but once the date was set, the waiting was killing me.
They take some time to get used to but well worth the effort. Todays denture materials are far superior to what our grandparents had offered to them so in many cases a good set of dentures is undetectable.
Do ask your dentist to show you examples of his work and if possible try to speak to someone he has treated.
Best wishes
Reply:Definitely get a second opinion. This is a biggie! Basically the reason your jaw bone is there is to hold your teeth in place. If you have your teeth removed it starts to be reabsorbed back into the body!!!! This causes REAL problems when trying to keep a denture in as there ends up being nothing for it to grip onto....especially true for the lower denture. You also mentioned that you already have very minimal bone, so this would be even more of a problem for you. IF HOWEVER you have even a couple of natural teeth left....keep them for as long as you can, and have a denture built around them. At least you will retain some bone AND the denture will have something to grip onto. This is one of the many reasons people have dental implants instead of just dentures....it helps preserve the bone. Dentures also can give you lots of other problems like sore mouth, ulceration etc
You should be able to have dental implants. A lady I used to work with had exactly the same problem as you and they grafted some bone from her thigh to buid up her jaw....then went ahead and did some implants......so......theres hope yet :)
