My uncle will be getting full dentures soon. But his doctor said that he needs to have ceratin pieces of bone (on the upper) shaved down first, or they wont fit.
I have seen these bone pieces, and they stick out, very pointy and obvious.
Will this cause him a lot of pain? Is this a normal proceedure?
Thanks All!
Bone shaved for dentures to fit?
I don't know if it is painful or not, though I expect it certainly wouldn't be pleasant. I have two of those things and the dentist says that they are bone spurs. I have never had any teeth extracted so I know that was not the cause. He told me not to worry about them unless I should need dentures someday, and then they would have to shave them off. So I guess that they are not that uncommon. I'm assuming that the base part of the denture plate wouldn't slide down over the darn things.
Reply:I have never heard of this...I hope he does well.
I hope this was not from the Dentist pulling so hard to get his teeth out.
I'm sure someone here has worked for a Dentist before are knows.
~Best wishes for your uncle~~
Reply:It sounds like it to me. This question should be asked in Health, I'm sure you'll get some good answers there. I know people that are on it all the time and get really good answers.
Reply:My question is "Why can't they make the dentures to fit without shaving his bone?" That sounds painful.
Reply:It is like changing socks and shoes and putting on new socks and shoes.
Wife had it done and never had any Novocaine.
Reply:Its normal to have bone splinters after having your teeth removed, it may be just that and yes they can grind the bone down, they will numb the area, or put him to sleep to do this.
Reply:the pain will be mostly in his mind -- the sound and the smell of the grinding will cause his mind to think he is in pain === but the area will be numb and he will not feel a thing!! wish him good luck with his new teeth!!!
Reply:eeeeuuuuu!!! No no usually the denture is made to fit the mouth! A mold is made of the mouth, not the opposite. Unless this is a bone shard from the surgery (rooth removal). This sounds painful! I would have him get a 2nd opinion.
