What are dentures made of? The part that holds the denture in, (not the teeth), when it turns dark, is there any way to turn it pink again? New dentures are just too expensive!
Dentures turning dark?
Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years. That part of the denture,.just like the teeth are plastic. And plastic stains horribly if not cleaned often. You must brush your dentures every day. Cleaning them in a denture solution in a glass 3-4 times a week will prevent stains, odor and build up of plaque and food.
The only way to get them cleaned now is to have your dentist untra-sound the dentures by hand to loosen the build up of stains and then put in a ultra-sonic cleaner for 20-30 minutes. I find people who smoke, drinks lots of coffee and alcohol have problems with their dentures staining very quickly. Not brushing and soaking them makes it even harder to clean them properly. Remember, not cleaning them properly makes them look terrible and that makes you feel bad. So take the time each day to brush them inside and out. Also be careful when you do this, I've had patients drop the dentures in the sink and crack them in 2. If that happens, they can never be repaired and must be replaced, so go slow and carefully. Put a towel in the sink while you brush them and rinse. M
Reply:While I'm sure most dentists and denture makers would freak, I soak mine in a bleach and water solution periodically. (Maybe once a week.) I use about 1/4 bleach, 3/4 water and soak them for an hour or so.
When I had a dishwasher, I used that! (Yup. popped them right in with the dishes. I did make sure they wouldn't get banged around, though.)
I've only had two sets in twenty five years, so I don't think it shortened their lives.
Just don't forget and pop them in your mouth with bleach on them! Yuk, ick, pitooeee!
