Help. I have to have top dentures.?

Which is the best way to go. Immediate dentures or wait until my mouth is healed and then be fitted for the dentures? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you don't mind going 4-6 months without any teeth whatsoever then by all means wait until final healing from the extractions has occurred.

In 23 years as a dentist, however, I have never had a patient do this.

Immediate dentures will need adjusting and you will probably need to have them relined (NOT remade) within the first six months. By the end of the first week after the extractions you will be fairly comfortable and functioning well.

Once healing has fully occurred, plan on leaving the dentures with the dentist for 24 hours while they are relined. You should then be good for many, many years with them.

I hope this helps.
Reply:To me the best way for getting dentures is to have the teeth extracted first. Start the preliminary impressions, but the final impressions should be taken 4-6 months later. That's if you have a large number of teeth to be extracted. This will give your mouth time to heel properly. You will experience swelling then some shrinkage. That's why you need to give yourself healing time when possible. Waiting 4-6 months will allow the dentures to fit better, with less adjustments.
