and why is it the costs r so different at different dentist s for same procedures, and dentures,i have other questions and will post them seperately due to space here,well,1400.00 for temp. and same for perm.ones...yet at another place can get perm.ones for less than 1/2 of that ? asked my dentist this and he had the assistant to answer it he had other persons waiting ,said sorry gotta run ,she said that my gums will shrink and i will need to get anew set so they will fit better,[well i know my gums will shrink]i asked if he would use the other dentures should i choose to buy them due to cost she said no ,he only will use his,i needed to get these teeth pulled before more bone loss but i cant aford his teeth [ever]even w/insurance my out of pocket was alot .its took me trips to other dentist for consultation and each had to get a x ray a cost out of my pocket, because these dentist wont share, insurance allows one x ray every other year, only 1000.00 a year 50.00 deductable, dont get much

What is the difference between temporary dentures and permanent ones,?
Immediates dentures you will get immediatley as soon as your teeth are extracted, they are also called healing dentures because your gums will swell on about the third day after extractions and it will take 6 months to a year for them to be completley healed you will have to go to the Dentist for adjusments because as your gums shrink it will rub a sore spot at certin places and the Dentist can just shave the denture down a little bit where the sore spot is ,you could have as many as 10 adjustments in this year, in the beginning it is more ( the first 3 weeks ) Some people such as I have chose to keep my immediate permantly it is for you to choose.New permanants dentures are known to be lighter and more comfortable because after 1 year you go back and take another immpression and all the gum tissue is healed so naturally the denture will be a better fit and you wont have to use any adhesives to hold them in. I know of a great web site and you can ask all the questions you have and we have alot of fun too the site is "denturesanewsmile.com I hope this helps. Good luck to you
Reply:The dentist is very expensive! That is for sure. I am dealing with that right now, and it sucks!

Anyway, the temporary denture is one they put in within 24 hours of your extractions, and it stays in while your gums heal, until you can be fitted for a permanent denture. It is so you don't have to go without teeth! They shouldn't cost that much, really.

You cannot use the temporary ones forever, as they will not fit for long.

Have you tried a dental school to get your procedures done? They are cheaper than a regular dentist, becuase the students are still learning, although they are supervised.

You could also apply for Care Credit, at www.carecredit.com that is a credit card for you to get dental work, and other medical things done. It is a good option for those who can't pay all at once...which happends to be most of the world!

WEll, I wish you all the best with whatever you decide to do. I know tooth problems are the worst!!!
Reply:If you live near a dental school, give them a try.

They charge about half of what a private dentist charges and the quality of care is good, but you do have to give up a lot of time (3 hours per session in the chair is typical).

Hope this helps a little.
Reply:First off, you didn't get raped by the dentist. Dentures are kinda like getting breast implants. You could go to the places that advertise in the back of a Cosmo magazine for $2000.00 or you could go to one of the top guys in the country and pay $15,000.00. Whats the difference? Quality, experience, materials, etc. Same goes with dentures. You can get a denture for about $400.00. I have seen places advertising these kinds.

In my office, we are very expensive, as we don't consider ourselves a low quality or cheap dental office. It is kinda like some people can only shop at Wal-Mart or Target and some can afford Macy's or Dillards. Or some can only afford a Ford Tempo and others can afford a Mercedes. Sounds like maybe you are going to the "Mercedes" dentists. If cost is a concern for you, you might try finding the "Ford Tempo" kind of offices and you would pay alot less.

As far as the difference between the temporary dentures and the permanant ones, really as far as materials go, there isn't usually a big difference, if any at all. With the temp ones, these are usually placed right when the teeth are extracted, and the dentists knows that the patient is going to return numerous times to have relines and adjustments done. Many charge a higher fee for these "temporary" ones in order to cover the cost of all these adjustments and relines. The permanant ones are usually done about 6-12 months after the extractions, after the majority of the shrinking and healing has happened.

As far as the dentist leaving the room and letting the assistant explain things to you, honey that happens alot more than you would think. It happens every single day in my office. We schedule a spedific amount of time for the dentist to actually be with each patient and the remainder of the time is with me. I am a registered dental assistant, and I have more than enough experience and training to explain things to a patient as good as, if not better, than my dentist. Many patients actually understand things better when I explain them, than when he does, considering that he uses alot of technical words that they don't understand, and I use plain and simple english.

As far as the x-rays, he can not refuse to make you a copy. According to my states dental laws, he has to make you a copy within 30 days of it being requested, but he also has the right to charge for it. I believe in my state a panoramic duplicate fee is about $20.00. I have a book that lists all our states dental laws in it, and it clearly says that he has to make you a copy, though he has the right to charge a reasonable fee, though not above what the state sets.
Reply:Not sure about why the cost for dentures differ other than the points you mentioned with shrinkage, jaw or bone density and so on. But I do this that there are some options available maybe you can check them out to help lower your out of pocket expense. The first option is a discount dental plan offering savings of up to 60% off routine and expensive dental procedures (dentures) plus on select plans you receive free exams, x-rays 2x per year, plus discounts on specialty dental services like dentures. Plus free added bonus benefits on vision care, hearing prescriptions and fitness.

In combination with your own insurance and a discount dental plan you can check the additional tips on the link below:
Reply:The materials are the same, and you can have your denture relined to keep the fit accurate as your tissues heal and shrink. Healing can take 6-12 months, temporary linings work very well and can be replaced every few months. A final reline can be done at about 10-12 months but each of these proceedures costs money. Depending on your state there may be a profession that makes dentures at a lower cost due to lower overhead. We are called denturists in Canada and we have been legal for over 20 years. Only six states allow denturists in the US but that is changing. google "dentures"

The cost is 1500 CDN$ for complete upper and lower dentures. the school idea is a good one. now that your teeth have been extracted wait 6-8 months to get a set you won't have to reline. If you get them earlier you will need a reline and that costs $250 here.
