I am 49 yrs. old and wear full dentures. I have no fatty tissue between my jawbone and gum! Please help!?
If you had a significant amount of your jawbone removed, you MAY not be able to get implants either---you need a significant amount of bone to SUPPORT the implants... prior to receiving 6 upper implants, I had to have a piece of my HIP BONE removed and grafted into my upper jaw... the bone graft took 4 MONTHS to heal...then the implants were drilled into the bone---they were about 1 inch long each... 4 months after that, the bone graft died and the implants began to fall out.... They decided to do a ZIGOMATIC IMPLANT (a nasty little thing where they screw the implant to your temple bone and weave it through your facial bones and down into your gums and then screw the teeth into the implants after that all heals up. The process is VERY expensive and NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE... each implant will run you about $2000 EACH and the teeth will run upwards to $8000.00!!!!! (just for UPPERS)... lowers will run you about the same. I went to a Maxilliofacial sugeon for ALL of the implant surgeries (3 total) and bone grafting.... a Prosthodontist did the teeth.... they are made differently for IMPLANTS then they are just for dentures.. Mine have a rim of GOLD and a rim of PLATINUM inside that acts as a gapper or kind of a "washer" between the gumline and the teeth... The Teeth are then SCREWED into the implants... NOT REMOVABLE... once a year I go back to my Prosthodontist to get the teeth cleaned and the implants checked.... I've been told the "shelf life" of these implants is only 10 YEARS!!!! which means you will need MORE implants somewhere near or after that 10 year mark....
Reply:well i am no doctor but i too wear dentures. if you can't wear yours and with all your trouble i would say to get implants if possible - that might be the only way to eat. otherwise ask a doctor or physical therapist. good luck!!!
