Root canals and caps, or dentures?

my dentist says she can save my teeth if i get two root canals and two caps, bc i have excellent root structure. my wife is urging me to just get them pulled, and get partials or full dentures. who should i listen to?

i would go with what dentist think is the best! My dentist said there's nothing like having your own teeth! I had 3 root canals and crowns for years now, it definitely saved my tooth :-)
Reply:it depends on your age, if your under 50 you should try to save your teeth, if your over 50 its ok to have them taken out to to get dentures.
Reply:Dentures are not nearly as good as your natural teeth.


Its worth saving them if possible

Unless, of course, you have grandchildren you want to scare by taking out your dentures...
Reply:With root canals and caps you will not feel the difference with regular teeth but they are pricey.


If you remove them and get partials there will always be some discomfort it will not be the same as repairing the existing ones.


I had 4 root canals and caps and I canot tell the difference between them and my other teeth.
Reply:U will be better of if u give more weight to what ur doc says. The feeling is much better after treatment. Dentures will always be poorer in fitting and may even break. Feeling of foreign material is also not very comforting when u use dentures.

Have you considered implants? I have two, and they are superb. They might as well be real; after all, they are rooted in my jawbone, just as natural teeth are.
Reply:I had two root canals and two caps. I don't have to worry about a thing, they're just teeth. I take care of them like the rest. I never have to take them out and fuss over them. Bad enough I need glasses to read, I want to eat without having to think about it.





So what's this deal with your wife? Does she begrudge you the money it will cost in order to eat comfortably? Or are you not telling us the whole story? Are these two teeth of the last five you have and she wants to see you with a full set again?
Reply:Too difficult to tell here as there are many variables.


Get a full costing. Then take copies of Xrays and seek a second opinion from another dentist or more (recommended by friends or workmates).


Big decisions require careful thinking and lots of info.
Reply:Some people still believe root canals cause all their health problems, and that's it better to extract perfectly recoverable teeth. Root canals work, and it's always better to get them instead of anything else if the teeth allow for it. There is always the risk it might fail, but the risk is very small.

Reply:Saving the teeth would be the optimal answer. However, RCT and crowns canbe pricey. If money is an issue, talk to your dentist about options for payment.
