Dentists and dentures!?

Are there any dentists out there? Can anyone advise why elderly relative takes her dentures out for most of the time?

Is it simply that over a period of time they have ceased to fit properly and are uncomfortable?

Would a new set fix the problem?

Dentists and dentures!?
Hi i am a dental nurse and have been doing the job for 3 years, the problem is that when the lower gum shrinks the denture will be loose, the upper denture should remain OK or at least bearable, as there is suction from the roof of the mouth , the only problem with the upper set they may have is that the teeth have worn away which causes the face to shrink in and this can be uncomfortable, the lower set however is a completely different story, when the gum receeds there is nothing for the denture to hold on to and if the teeth that were supporting her denture have fallen out then the denture will be almost impossible to wear, not only this but if the dentures are old then again the teeth could have worn away, but a new set is not always the best answer as this can be more uncomfortable. In reality if the dentures are plastic and older than 10 years then yes they should be replaced but the new lower set will not be a good fit and they may cause more problems, the upper set would be better they should fit tighter and nicer. Another factor is the persons age, if they are too old they may not adapt to the new sets and then it would have been pointless. Never the less i am not a dentist so if you can get the person to a dentist that would be great as you can hear the different options available.
Reply:yes mouths and gums shrink and go soft
Reply:Over time the Tissue in the mouth will resorb and so the denture will become lose. In addition the tooth may become worn. If they are happy with the denture apart from the fit, the dentist should be able to make a copy denturewhich will produce a similar result but a better fit. Hope it helps
Reply:I am 45 %26amp; have false teeth. (embarrassing) didn't look after them. Your gums do shrink, so your teeth get uncomfortable, hence not wanting to wear them. Maybe your relative needs to go to the dentist, to get them sorted. Not being disrespectful, but she/he can get a new set, or get them tightened. Sounds daft, but you can get false teeth tightened. They are tightened by taking an impression of how they are now. Hope this helps, %26amp; happy munching. XX
